Mike Schlossman received his BA in Anthropology and Sociology from Amherst College and an M.Phil in Criminology from the University of Cambridge. His senior thesis was a qualitative study of how juvenile court staff viewed youth drug use in the context of their professional and personal lives and how they justified the creation of a drug court that focused primarily on marijuana. He has also studied historical trends in violent crime, with a focus on the decline in violent crime in late 19th and early 20th century England and its relationship to the expansion of the English welfare state.

Mike is interested in the law as a framework for understanding at a micro-level how inequalities get reproduced as well as how social change occurs. His research will most likely focus on discretionary behavior in the criminal justice system and how the organizational routines and collective understandings of police and probation officers contribute to, accentuate, and challenge mass incarceration in the United States.
